MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MEETING ON 16th February

Firstly, thank you for braving the cold at the Oasis Centre.  The wind seemed to cut straight through the centre!

BThe first part of the session, concerned with the desktop, icons and windows (small "w") seemed to go well, with you all seeming to understand what I was on about.  If you have any worries, the topic is explained fully in the text book on pages 26 to 29.  If you didn't get everything concerned with the brief exploration of "Explore", don't worry.  We'll be spending time on this later.

Some of you didn't realise that I will be referring to the text book quite a lot, and that it would definitely be worth your while getting it - and bringing it with you to the sessions!

The main "matter arising" was that many of you have been having trouble accessing this web site.  Writing about it here is a bit of a chicken and egg situation, as if you are reading this you've obviously got through to the site OK.  However, to reiterate.

1. You must be connected to the Internet through dial-up networking to get this or any other web page. If you can see two connected monitors as an icon in the bottom right hand corner of your desktop, you are connected.  If you get a "not available" message try refreshing the page, either through the tool bar icon or by pressing F5.  This may well jolt your computer into advising you to connect to the Internet.

2. Make sure you have the correct address - http://billnot.com

3. If you're still getting errors, make a not of what the error says, and LET ME KNOW, by e-mail if possible, as I rely on the web site for distribution of lots of the material I create for the course

On 2nd March, I will be going through connecting to the Internet, setting up accounts and using Outlook Express and Internet Explorer again.  You may wish to refer to the notes I made for these topics previously, which you can find somewhere in the material for the Autumn 2001 sessions (it won't hurt for you to do the searching for yourselves).

THE PROJECT

At the surgery on 9th February, we decided to try and build a computer of our own to use at The Oasis from donated parts.  We have many parts already, but our main priority is for a printer.  So if you know of anybody who has a spare printer going begging, tell them you know of a good cause! We also need a sound card, but this is not a priority - the computer will work without it.  If you'd like to come along and join in, the next surgery is next Saturday, 23rd February at 1030 at The Oasis.

Finally, a reminder of my e-mail addresses:

billnot@billnot.com for general mail

questions@billnot.com for questions to be answered in the Grapevine or at a session.
